How Not to Blog

I read a few blogs every week, as I'm sure you all do. Reading others' blogs is a great way to learn, not only what they're blogging about, but also what does and does not work in the "blogosphere." I want to point out three things that cause me to stop reading a person's blog.

Everyone is busy; time is at a premium. Here are three practical ways to respect your readers' time. 
These three things make me click off a blog, even in the midst of reading:

1. Poor grammar. I simply can't get past poor grammar. I'm not talking about the occasional typo; I'm talking about the abuse of the English language I see on some blogs. I click off and usually don't go back.

2. Music. I usually play my own music, or need a quiet room for my kids. When I open a blog post and music starts playing immediately, I click off. 

3. Links that don't open in a new window. Bloggers, set your links to open in a new window so your readers won't lose the original post! This is common sense, or should be. The goal is to keep readers on your blog, not going off to a new link. If I click on a link that opens in a new window, I can save that opened tab for later while I finish reading what the blogger has to say.

Just Think

Sometimes, I just need to think.  Life is busy, praise God, and time to think is a sweet luxury. This weekend, I am home almost alone....just myself and my 18-year-old daughter.  My hubby took my two teenage sons on a father/son retreat, leaving us girls here alone and I've actually had time to think. What's a Mom to do When her Son goes off to War?

Tears in a Bottle  is filled with short, easy to read articles that address every day life from the perspective of my personal walk with God. Some articles in  Tears in a Bottle  were previously published  by Regular Baptist Press, either in their Sunday School adult papers or their magazine,  The Baptist Bulletin . About Letting Go , the second article in Tears in a Bottle , is the very personal story of when one of our sons decided to join the Marine Corps Infantry after 9/11. Just 17-years-old, he saw Ground Zero and felt the Holy Spirit was telling him to do his part to fight terrorism. My struggle with his decision is laid bare in this transparent article. Overcoming Failure - Part 2

Every writer fails, no matter how successful they are. In my book, Writing for Publication , I talk about failure, how it's inevitable and how to overcome it as a writer. Today, I'm sharing my second point on how to overcome failure and rejection as a writer. I think of this point as logic at work. Don't let rejection slow you down. Realize and accept that rejection is part of the job of writing for publication. If you accept this, it will not surprise you when it happens. It's a given, par for the course. It truly cannot be avoided. What you need to do is file the rejection away.... then keep writing without missing a beat.
